Scaffold planking on larger jobs can be a substantial investment. Using questionable or damaged planking on the job can open companies to shutdowns, investigations, and fines in the event of an accident. Our plank testers were originally designed to test our scaffold planking for OSHA compliance before they left our mill. Once on the jobsite, however, planking starts to deteriorate. Improper storage, jobsite abuse, chemicals and water can contribute to internal damage on planking that is not visible during a casual inspection. The only way to be sure that planking still complies with OSHA specifications is to test it, or to buy new. While not everyone can justify the cost of a dedicated planking tester, it does make sense for some. Marginal planking can be re-branded for a lower specification (heavy-duty to light-duty, for example) and questionable planking can be verified within specifications. One of our larger customers was able to salvage 25% of the planking that they were normally scrapping as out-of-spec on visual inspection alone.
